SSO General Manager

The SSO seeks a highly motivated, highly organized person with a passion for live performance to be its General Manager. This is a part time position located in beautiful Stratford, Ontario, population 30,000. This person will play a key role in developing one of the jewels in the cultural fabric of Stratford.






The Stratford Civic Orchestra is a professional orchestra founded in 2004. It is a very highly regarded orchestra, presenting excellent performances with a broad stylistic range. The SSO presents an annual season of live performances of classical and contemporary music, with a special emphasis on Canadian composers and guest artists. It has become a leader in producing digital performances and is an integral part of the region's arts community.  The orchestra has a strong education and outreach program and collaborates with many other cultural and educational organizations. The SSO’s Principal Conductor and Music Director William Rowson is well known for his work with the SSO as well the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and others. The SSO has a motivated, dedicated Board of Directors and an able team of part-time staff that makes each season successful.





The General Manager will report directly to the Board of Directors and work closely with the Principal Conductor and Music Director as well as the standing committees of the Board. Supporting part-time staff include an Office Manager, Personnel Manager, Volunteer Manager, Librarian, Marketing Manager, Stage Manager and Bookkeeper.






The General Manager will assist in developing the SSO through the following responsibilities:

- overseeing the strategic planning, resource development, finance, and day-to-day administration of the orchestra
- lead and drive all fund raising activities such as Sponsorships, Donations, Grants and Fundraising events
- ensuring that the mandates and goals of the SSO are being met
- following the direction of the Board and the SSO's operational plan
- developing the infrastructure (funding; artistic quality; musician pay) required to move the SSO into a sustainable future
- broadening the community relations that will lead to growth and continued success in all key areas of the SSO
- being directly involved in liaising with the key venues and guest artists

The General Manager will manage an annual budget of $170,000 or more.




A postsecondary degree and/or strong arts administrative experience
A strong business background and experience in managing a budget is required
Experience in marketing and fundraising is required
Grant writing experience preferred
Skills in time management and event planning are required
Comfort with Microsoft Office and Google applications is expected
Self-motivated and deadline driven
attention to detail
