Gwendolyn Nguyen, Principal cellist

Principal cellist of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra, Gwendolyn Nguyen, has performed at many prestigious events including a human rights symposium hosted by former president Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of the Governor General of Canada (Michaëlle Jean).

She has played alongside such classical virtuosos as Mischa Maisky, David Geringas, and Scott St. John. Equally comfortable in other genres such as pop and jazz, she has performed with Diana Krall, Michael Bolton, The Stars, and Pink Martini.

Gwendolyn has toured Japan with Joe Hisaishi (Miyazaki films) as principal cellist of La Pietà, and through Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean with Rwandan singer Corneille.

Some prominent venues she has played at include the Lincoln Center (NYC), Jordan Hall (Boston), The Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Verbier Festival (Switzerland), Les Victoires de la Musique (French Grammys) in Paris, and the 2011 Juno awards (Canadian Grammys) in Toronto.

A graduate of New England Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and McGill University, Gwendolyn enjoys passing on her musical knowledge to new generations of students as a private teacher, and coach of the Stratford Symphony Youth orchestra. She is looking forward to soloing this season with the SSO.

You can hear Gwendolyn Nguyen’s stunning cello performance  at our upcoming concert, "Orchestral Fireworks!" on April 5.
